Meet Barbara Hinson:

Leader, Innovator, Problem-Solver


Our Spotlight member is Barbara Hinson. Barbara has been a dedicated member of DKG for over 53 years and has made a significant mark through her leadership and service.

She has served as president of Alpha Rho chapter from 1974-1978 and again from 1998-2000. At the state level, she held the position of Tennessee State Second Vice President from 1983-1985 and served as state treasurer from 1985-1987. In recognition of her outstanding contributions, Barbara received the prestigious Tennessee State Achievement Award in 2003. Throughout the years, she has been an active participant on every chapter and state committee, and has served on several international committees, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the organization. Barbara currently serves as the Area VII Director, traveling across the region to support and encourage local chapters. Additionally, she continues to contribute her expertise as a member of the Tennessee State Planning Committee and as the Treasurer of her chapter.

Barbara is an innovator and problem solver. When chapter participation began to decline, Barbara introduced themed meetings and interactive programs that blended fellowship with professional development. These fresh ideas rekindled interest among members and encouraged more consistent attendance and involvement. Barbara is a natural at building others up - celebrating their successes, encouraging them to take on new challenges, and helping members to grow into leadership roles themselves. She cultivates a culture of service, support, and shared responsibility that leads and supports innovative and creative action.

Barbara is the kind of leader who does not wait to be asked - she sees a need and steps forward. Throughout her fifty-three years in DKG and forty-two years of education, she has taken on numerous leadership roles. In each of these positions, she brings not only organization skill and reliability, but also a deep commitment to the mission and purposes of DKG. Her leadership is marked in quiet strength, thoughtful decision-making, and an unwavering focus on collaboration. Barbara is the go-to person when a committee needs an extra set of hands or a steady voice of experience. Whether it is planning events, updating records, or helping facilitate workshops, she is always willing to lend her time and talents wherever they are most needed. Her presence on any team brings both reassurance and results. Barbara also shines as a mentor and encourager. She takes special care to invite and welcome new members, guiding them through their first meetings, helping them find meaningful ways to get involved and making sure they feel seen and valued.

Barbara Hinson is widely recognized as one of the most dedicated and hardworking volunteer citizens in her hometown of Hohenwald, Tennessee. With a remarkable 42-year career in education, she retired as principal of Lewis County Elementary School, leaving behind a lasting impact on generations of students, families, and educators. Her commitment to education continues through her volunteer work with the Lewis County Board of Education. Barbara is also an active member of the Lewis County Historical Society and plays a key role in promoting local tourism through the Lewis County Chamber of Commerce, where she proudly serves as an Ambassador. As a charter member of Pilot Club International, she continues to enrich her community - most notably by helping to provide playground swings for the middle school and planting flowers throughout the downtown square to enhance the city's beautification efforts. In recognition of her many years of service, Barbara was honored with the Tennessee Governor's Volunteer Star Award in 2021 - a well deserved tribute to her enduring dedication to her community.

Barbara's impact on education is both profound and far-reaching. Over her 42-year career as an educator - culminating in her role as principal of Lewis County Elementary School - she shaped the academic and personal growth of countless students, while also mentoring young educators and supporting staff with a calm, capable presence. She championed student-centered learning long before it became a widespread educational focus, encouraging creativity in the classroom and always prioritizing the individual needs of students. Even in retirement, her passion for education remains unwavering. She continues to serve as a volunteer with the Lewis County Board of Education, offering her insight and experience to support school initiatives and educational planning. Through her example, mentorship, and lifelong advocacy, Barbara has inspired generations of learners and educators alike - leaving a lasting impression in the lives she has touched and the community she has strengthened.

Barbara is not just a member of DKG, she has dedicated an impressive 53 years to the organization. Despite her long tenure, she approaches her involvement with the same excitement and enthusiasm as someone who has just discovered DKG for the first time. Her unwavering passion for the principles and values of DKG is evident in everything she does, whether she is participating in meetings, mentoring new members, or organizing events.
